2-1-Q #5
The first panel that stood out to me is the one on the left of the second row on page 100. The image of the family riding in the car was very impactful as it is depicting them as being free. It is the first time for a while in the story that there are no guards or fences around them. On the panel George is reminiscing on the memory as being very peaceful and warm. The second panel that I found interesting is the bottom left one on page 82. Two older boys are playing war and fighting over who gets to be America in their game of America…

2-1-Q #4
The first panel that stood out to me was the one on page 76. I liked the way it was laid out with three scenes happening in one panel. Other than the layout, I found the text interesting. According to the panel, it didn’t matter what background a Japanese American came from, they were all considered to be the same, and to be criminals. The other panel that I found interesting is the one on the top right of page 70. This panel depicts the families living arrangements in the camp. Barracks are not very homey, but the panel shows that they tried to make it feel like one. The…

2-1-Q #3
The first panel that stood out to me was the second one from the top on page 37. The horrible conditions of the train came across very well through the art. I liked the use of onomatopoeias to show the noisiness inside the train cars. The shading on the floor also gave the train a quality of dirtiness. The second panel that I found interesting was the top one on page 41. I found that the way that the three panels were combined into one helped depict the scene better. The screeching tires cutting through the middle helped portray the loudness of it. The change from the passengers sleeping to…

2-1-Q #2
I found the top panel on page 26 very interesting. Having a smaller panel inside of a bigger panel isn’t something I’ve seen before. I like that it draws the reader’s attention to two different images that relate to each other. I also found it interesting that the smaller panel is still structured like a regular panel and has its own text. Another panel that caught my eye was the top one on page 32. The difference in reaction to the horse stall between the kids and parents was very impactful. The way that the parent’s faces are drawn conveys their worry and anxiety about the situation. On the other…

2-1-Q #1
I found the panel on the right side of page 3 to be very interesting. This panel shifted the narrative as it shows that the story is being told as a look back on the past. In the panel there is George on a stage with a huge audience in front of him and a Tedtalk sign behind him. The rest of the story so far has taken place when George was a child, but he is now depicted as an adult on this panel. This tells us that the story that is being told in the previous panels is about George’s childhood. Another panel that I liked was the…

QCQ #2
A quote from the passage that I found interesting was, “At times, while reading a graphic novel, we can lose sight of the fact that we are looking at a page.” I chose this quote because I can relate to it. I’ve never been a fan of graphic novels and I find when I have to read them that I tend to skim the pages and only glance at the pictures. The paragraph that this quote begins touches on how students have a tendency to not pay attention to the pictures in graphic novels. The visual element in a text often feels unimportant to some readers, especially those who don’t…

QCQ #1
A quote from the passage that stood out to me was, “Seeing the canyon under approved circumstances is seeing the symbolic complex head on. The thing is no longer the things as it confronted the Spaniard; it is rather that which has already been formulated-by picture postcard, geography book, tourist folders, and the words Grand Canyon.” I chose this quote because I think that it could be called the thesis of this passage. The idea that once something is discovered and spread through society it no longer can hold the same meaning that it did for the discoverer connects to a major theme throughout the text. This theme is the…
