2-1-Q #1
I found the panel on the right side of page 3 to be very interesting. This panel shifted the narrative as it shows that the story is being told as a look back on the past. In the panel there is George on a stage with a huge audience in front of him and a Tedtalk sign behind him. The rest of the story so far has taken place when George was a child, but he is now depicted as an adult on this panel. This tells us that the story that is being told in the previous panels is about George’s childhood. Another panel that I liked was the top one on the left side of page 6. The panel depicts George and his family decorating for Christmas when he was a child. There is a date at the top of the page that lets us know that this is the day that Pearl Harbor occurred. I liked the way that the scene seems so happy and simple to the reader until they read the date.
After the events of Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066. This order gave the Secretary of War and some military commanders the power to mark certain places as military zones. Public Law 503 followed this, which gave courts permission to enforce the orders the military made using Executive Order 9066. The effects of these being put into place was the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans on the West Coast. https://www.nps.gov/miin/learn/historyculture/pearl-harbor-and-executive-order-9066.htm
Do you think that the dual timeline makes the story more impactful?
